Wednesday, 18th of March 2020. Sylt in times of the Corona pandemic
Dear friends of Hotel Benen-Diken-Hof,
Dear friends of the Island Sylt,
Today is a very serious and extraordinary day at Hotel Benen-Diken-Hof. A day with these measures taken has never happened before. Today all of the remaining guests in our hotel and from the Island Sylt had to depart. At the moment we – people who live on Sylt – are slowly grasping the situation that is happening around us. For a very long time we haven’t been without tourists, we can’t remember the last time the island has been this quite or the last time the future was this uncertain for all of us.
That the islanders are left isolated on the island now and out guests had to leave is definitely the right decision given the current circumstances. In a case of emergency, the medical care on the Island would have not been sufficient for both islanders and guests and even now the situation could get problematic if the number of contaminated rises significantly. We hope that last-named situation won’t occur and are therefore acting mindful and respectful.
The economic situation for all establishments on Sylt of course be challenging just like everywhere else.
For us now a time has come to pause for a moment and think about new ways of being together. We will take even more care of our families and our employees and the islanders will take care of each other and carry and overcome our worries together. Together we will think about what we can do for each other. And do it.
We will not lose faith and try to make the best out of the situation.
Spring has arrived on Sylt and we are enjoying the smell of fresh flowers, the warmth of the sun, the fresh ocean breeze and the screaming seagulls above our heads. It is beautiful here on Sylt.
On the 19th of April – so in about 5 weeks – we will know more. Maybe Sylt and the Benen-Diken-Hof can welcome back our dear guests already then. We hope that the situation in the whole country will have improved significantly by then and that our government will repeal the island quarantine and the nationwide travel ban. In the meantime, we will prepare for the returning of our guests.
We will keep you updated on the development of the situation.
We are already now looking forward to seeing you all again and celebrating life together here on Sylt,
Your hosts at Benen-Diken-Hof,
Anja & Claas-Erik Johannsen and Johannes Welker
